Beethoven Horn Sonata Movt. 1
Recorded in recital at All Saints Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta January 29, 2012. Performed on a well travelled Seraphinoff cor solo made some time in the late 1980s I believe copied from a Lucien Joseph Raoux cor solo. Originally ordered for a hornist in Windsor Ontario, it then made its way to England, back to Canada, then to Amsterdam and then back to Canada again. The great hornist Giovanni Punto, who premiered this Sonata, also used a Raoux cor solo made of sterling silver but I believe his horn was made in 1777 by papa Joseph Raoux. Thus, not quite identical to this horn. Punto nee Jan Vaclav Stich was a Bohemian serf working for the evil Count von Thun. When Stich decided upon a solo career in horn, Count von Thun was furious and ordered his henchmen to capture the fleeing Stich or at least knock out his front teeth!! Stich escaped to Northern Italy and changed his name to Giovanni Punto. The rest is history. He became the toast of Europe and first performed the Sonata with the lesser known Beethoven in 1800. Punto died only 3 years later in 1803, teeth intact. Thousands lined the streets of Prague to honour their hero's funeral procession. Recorded with mixed 16 bit 48 kHz tracks from an H2 Zoom unfortunately set at low gain and a Canon Vixia HF S30 videocamera. Mixed with Logic Pro, reverb added and then synchronised with camera video in Final Cut. Mouthpiece is modern, Laskey 80G, European shank, sits about one quarter inch too far out of the lead pipe.
