| Winning Edge series features Henry "Gizmo" Williams | more . . . |
For CFL legend Henry "Gizmo" Williams the word pressure has nothing to do with football. The following lines explain why.
"The football comes down out of the sky to the little man who waits, alone and vulnerable while a tidal wave of angry humanity flows toward him. In the world of games men play for pay, there may be no position that requires more courage than that of football's punt returner. And nobody on either side of the 49th parallel has ever done it better than Henry (Gizmo) Williams. But if you equate what he does for a living with pressure, then you don't know where Gizmo Williams has been or, even more terrifying, where he is going.
Pressure is waking up in the morning and in those first few moments after your eyes flutter open, taking stock, listening to your body. Any tingling? Any numbness? Vision clear? Not dizzy? ?To this point I have no symptoms, none.? See, Williams comes from a family that has been virtually wiped out by multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system. It took his mother first, back in 1969, then started in on the kids. Since then it has claimed seven of his 10 brothers and sisters."
The Alberta Sport and Development Centre (ASDC) at Keyano College, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, is proud to present Henry "Gizmo" Williams former Edmonton Eskimo to headline their Winning Edge Series on August 30 at 7 p.m. in the Keyano Theatre.
Keyano College, Shell, Alberta Sport and Development Centre and 100.5 K-ROCK, are proud to present Henry "Gizmo" Williams, headlining the first Winning Edge series event of the academic year. Schedule for Monday, August 30 at 7 p.m. in Keyano Theatre, the evening will feature an inspirational talk by Gizmo, highlighting his struggles and how he overcame them to achieve incredible success.
Winning Edge is a series of seminars hosted by the ASDC. The goal, according to Sean Seywright, Coordinator, ASDC, Northeast, is to "get athletes in our programs as well as all athletes in the community to share in knowledge normally not provided by their everyday coach or team experience."
"We bring in guest speakers to talk about nutrition, sport psychology, off-court training, testing, college prep, and other topics of that nature that are not covered by technical or tactical training."
Seywright is also the Huskies Women?s Volleyball Coach at the Centre. He says hosting this event is an honour because Gizmo is inspiration personified especially for young athletes.
"This is a huge event for the ASDC and Keyano. Gizmo not only brings expertise as he talks to athletes about perseverance, getting out of a tough lifestyle to achieve your dreams and what it takes when you have little in the way of support systems but you are still able to succeed. I think there are a lot of young athletes in this town and in nearby communities that can really connect to those issues and that is huge. We are bringing in a role model and that means a lot."
"On the other side of the coin it adds to the credit of our Winning Edge Series as well as the College?s commitment to finding top level speakers. Gizmo is a legend in Alberta for all of his community and athletic work he did in Edmonton through the CFL and Eskimos. Having him here adds that certain star quality to one of our events," he explains.
Tickets are $17 each. Call Keyano Box Office at 780-791-4990.

| Huskies Athletics launches Community Outreach Program | more . . . |
Youth and coach development, the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the impact of sport in Wood Buffalo were some of the goals targeted by Huskies Athletics as they launched their Community Outreach Program last weekend in Fort Chipewyan.
Konrad Plante, Huskies Men?s Volleyball Coach, and Sean Seywright, Huskies Women's Volleyball Coach, Keyano College, were in Fort Chipewyan from August 6 through 8 to conduct volleyball sessions at the Athabasca Delta Community School with youth ages six to 14, as well as the high school coaches.
"The idea was to help with leadership and youth as well as coach development," explains Mike Connolly, Huskies Athletics Coordinator and Men's Basketball Coach, Keyano College.
Over a dozen youth came out to partake in the camp and clinics, which also attracted community members who wanted to learn the fine points of volleyball.
The coaches conducted an evening session on Friday, a full day session on Saturday and a morning session on Sunday before flying back. Coach Plante says the trip was not only an opportunity to share volleyball pointers, but to also discuss the importance of physical activity with local staff such as the youth and community programmer, public health nurse and even local RCMP officers.
"We discussed daily challenges with physical activity and the need to promote it with youth, and also general activities or opportunities for them to stay and be active. Our new coach Sean Seywright was quite impressed by Fort Chipewyan," Plante explained.
"I really enjoyed my trip to Fort Chipewyan and even more the chance to share my love and passion for volleyball and sports. I hope this is the beginning of an ongoing relationship with the community and that in the future we see some of these students attend our College and be part of our successful athletic programs," Plante added.
The Huskies also donated gently used equipment such as volleyballs, mini-volleyballs and a volleyball net.
Connolly says as the pilot program grows, the intention is to involve athletes as well. The program was launched on the heels of the successful weekly soccer camp which ran in Fort McKay this summer.
"This is part of the big picture as Huskies Athletics becomes a presence in the Wood Buffalo region. Our belief is that the College is a community resource - our instructors, our coaches - we service the community," added Connolly.
Jim Foote, President, Keyano College, agrees. He says the program is a great opportunity for Huskies Athletics to demonstrate many sports around the region.
"I grew up in a small community in Valley View, Peace River Country and I know the profound impact sports have on individuals. This is the beginning of a great program not only for Fort Chipewyan but all the communities in Wood Buffalo," Foote noted. |

| Keyano and King announced as new home of interPLAY | more . . . |
Fort McMurray's signature festival, interPLAY will be moving to King Street starting next year, and Keyano College will be the hub for the annual arts and cultural festival, as announced by Events Wood Buffalo in a press conference today.
interPLAY has outgrown its current location on Franklin Avenue. In addition, owing to increased traffic in the downtown core, the impending opening of the new bridge, and planned physical changes to Franklin Avenue, an exciting and permanent home for interPLAY has been found on King Street, using existing infrastructure with the potential to connect Keyano College, Composite High School and Heritage Park.
Claude Giroux, Executive Director, Events Wood Buffalo, believes the collaboration between Keyano College and interPLAY will not only mean a larger venue for the festival but also a chance for the College to show-off its facilities.
"The theatre facilities at Keyano are among the best I have ever seen. They are a well-kept secret and they shouldn?t be a secret. Once people walk into these facilities, they will return for more," Giroux said.
Cindy Amerongen, Vice President, External Relations, Keyano College, applauded interPLAY's move and looks forward to a strong partnership.
"The history of interPLAY is one of a grass-roots organization. We're absolutely delighted to partner with the group and look forward to working with our neighbours to ensure the festival's continuity and growth," Amerongen said.
Russell Thomas, Director, Marketing & Communications, Keyano College and Events Wood Buffalo President first pitched the idea for the partnership to Keyano College this summer, which was immediately supported by senior leadership.
"It is my experience that we can do so much better by doing things together. This partnership is another great example of this," said Thomas.
Keyano College will be the location for the indoor theatre shows in addition to providing facilities for volunteers and visiting artists. Doug MacRae Park and the Theatre & Arts Centre parking lot will host all the activities and structures historically found on Franklin Avenue during the celebrated event. |

| Huskies Athletics announces new Women's Soccer Coach and Youth Programmer | more . . . |
Huskies Athletics is pleased to welcome Claude Bolton, Women's Soccer Coach and Youth Programmer to the team.
Coach Bolton joined Keyano College on July 14 and brings with him over a dozen years of professional coaching experience. He holds the National "A" Goalkeeping and Fitness licenses from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) - the highest levels in North America, and also holds a National Coaches Certification Program (NCCP) Level III Certificate. In 2006 he took Trent University from being ranked last in the country to seeing its first post-season action in 22 years and its first quarterfinal appearance in history.
He comes to Keyano via Guyana, South America, where he was the Head Coach in the National League that was established by FIFA and The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), which according to their official website is the "governing body for soccer (football) in the region, and one of six continental authorities that administer the game along with FIFA, the world governing body."
Originally from Toronto, Coach Bolton says Fort McMurray and Keyano College impressed him with their unlimited potential.
"I have travelled a fair bit, compared to other small communities Fort McMurray has everything you need. Keyano College was a wonderful surprise with its many resources and friendly staff who go out of their way to help you," Bolton said.
Discussing his short and long-term goals, Bolton says the ultimate goal is to cultivate excellence in athletes both on and off-court.
"I want to start by setting standards, which allow athletes to gain the understanding and self-respect needed to succeed. Establishing standards for long-term athlete development will help us as a team to decide what it means to be a Huskies Women's Soccer player. Recruitment and community outreach are also some of my priorities," explained Bolton.
Wade Kolmel, Director, Syncrude Sport & Wellness, Keyano College has high expectations of Coach Bolton.
"We are very excited to have added Coach Bolton to our Huskies coaching staff," he said.
"Claude has a number of professional coaching experiences alongside his tenure at Trent University where he was part of a women's soccer program that went through a successful rebuilding period as they competed in the Ontario University Athletics Association (OUAA). Claude's sport development background will further enhance the youth sport programming at Keyano College as the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre staff continue to offer the initial stages of athlete development programming in Fort McMurray," Kolmel added. |

| A commitment to the community that's come full circle for Bouchier Contracting Ltd. | more . . . |
Having to hitchhike back and forth from Fort McKay to Keyano's Suncor Energy Industrial Campus every day didn't deter David Bouchier from pursuing his dream to get his heavy equipment training. Now 27 years later, David and his wife Nicole are the proud owners of a successful company with a fleet of over 70 pieces of equipment and 300 employees.
As the need for a trained workforce continues in our region, the commitment from local companies and industry to address this need is substantial. Bouchier Contracting Ltd., of the Bouchier group, recognizes this fact and has recently made an outright donation of a 2001 Cat D6M Crawler Tractor to Keyano Foundation's Equipped for the Future initiative.
For Nicole Bouchier, CEO, Bouchier Contracting Ltd. the donation means completing the cycle. She is a Keyano alum, who completed the Computer Information System Program over a decade ago and her husband, David Bouchier, who runs the company with her, completed his Heavy Equipment training at the College in 1983. Dave also gives of his time as a Band Councillor for the Fort McKay First Nation.
"Keyano College means a lot to us. We are long-time residents of the Wood Buffalo region and we believe in giving back to the community that has supported us. Training our workforce is really important and we hire trained mechanics and operators from Keyano all the time, so this donation made sense to us," explained Bouchier, who sits on the Keyano Foundation Board and is also the President of the Northeastern Alberta Aboriginal Business Association (NAABA).
"Keyano's training," adds Bouchier, "ranging from the Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Program to Health & Safety is designed for both industry and the community."
"The programming is connected to the region. Keyano is really important to us," she added.
Dale Unruh, Chair of the Keyano Foundation, appreciates the Bouchier donation immensely.
"Nicole and David Bouchier's donation reflects their incredible community spirit. They are true community builders and their support to the College will help build a strong regional workforce," noted Unruh.
The Equipped for the Future initiative was launched last fall by the Keyano College Foundation in response to the Trades & Heavy Industrial Division's need to cut lease and purchase costs of equipment for use in training offered at the Suncor Energy Industrial Campus.
Some of the equipment required includes: bobcats, skid steer loaders, rough terrain forklifts, wheel loaders, and excavators to name a few. |

| Keyano to launch the online Office Software Specialist Program this fall | more . . . |
Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Access have become mandatory elements of today's office environment. Learning these important applications will now become easier because of Keyano's new online Office Software Specialist Program coming this fall.
The Office Software Specialist is an online certificate program that consists of nine courses, such as Microsoft Word Specialist, Business Communications, and Windows & File Management to name a few. The courses vary in length.
Gina Langager, Chair, Business, Keyano College, notes the initiative is for both newcomers to Microsoft Applications and those wanting more expertise.
"The certificate program is targeted at two groups of people. The first includes those who need advanced experience or training in Microsoft Office applications, for example those who are moving into management. The second group includes office workers who have gaps in their knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. They do it all in a convenient flexible way," Langager says.
She adds the program, offered via eCampusAlberta, a consortium of 15 Alberta colleges and universities, is credit and ladders into other programs.
The nine core courses are offered in addition to specialty options, which enable people with workplace experience to not only advance their knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, but also partially prepares them for Microsoft Business Certification.
These courses are also offered as part of the Office Administration Diploma Program, which is also available via eCampusAlberta. Students who don't want to take the entire diploma program can still become experts in Microsoft Office applications by taking the certificate program.
"Since there is no structured timeline or sequence for taking the courses, students can plan their course load to suit their schedule. They can focus on the applications that are the most important to them first and pick up the other courses later," continues Langager.
The Office Software Specialist certificate program, which is designed for part-time study for full-time workers, typically takes from one to three years to complete.

| Geocaching anyone? Keyano invites high-tech treasure hunters | more . . . |
You probably won't be hearing them say cold, cold, warm, warm, and hot! That's the beauty of treasure-hunting with a GPS; geocachers around the region are invited to Keyano College to look for three stratetigically placed caches across the campus.
Geocaching is rapidly gaining popularity around the world. According to geocaching.com it is a "high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online." Items are often trackable, and many even travel the world.
Keyano's first two caches are micros, which are small containers with only a log-sheet. The third one is a container with Keyano College items. The coordinates can be found online at www.geocaching.com along with hints.
Shauna Gale, Workforce Development Instructor, Keyano College, started the initiative. She says geocaching is not only a great way to be active, but also a chance for quality time with your family, friends and colleagues.
"We are encouraging Keyano staff and the community to visit the geocaches and try to leave items from other schools. This is relationship building and a chance for a lot of fun," Gale notes.
Fort McMurray is home to more than 52 geocaches, according to Gale, a number that went significantly up this year - there were only 15 as of last September, she notes.
Geocaching.com reports that more than 1.4 million geocaches have been hidden, and found by more than four million people worldwide. The United States and Germany lead the world in this activity, with the Czech Republic, Canada and the United Kingdom right behind them. |

| eCampusAlberta surpasses 10,000 registrations for the first time | more . . . |
As online education gains momentum, access to post-secondary education has become a reality for many people - eCampusAlberta is at the heart of making this happen in Alberta. The online institution recently hit its largest number of registrations since its inception in 2002.
According to an official new release, eCampusAlberta officially exceeded 10,000 course registrations for the 2009/10 academic year and is on track to reach well over 12,000 by June 30.
"We are currently anticipating a year-over-year increase in registrations of more than 30 per cent, whereas in 2008/09 our year-over-year increase was 29 per cent. This is noteworthy as it demonstrates that our registrations are not only growing, but are continuing to grow at a slightly accelerated rate," says eCampusAlberta Finance and Operations Coordinator, Craig Lawson.
A consortium of 15 Alberta colleges and technical institutes, eCampusAlberta facilitates greater access to high quality online learning opportunities.
Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College, applauded the news and says "the 10,000 registrations is indicative of the need to have these courses and programs available to regional and remote communities and truly identifies a need for access through online learning programming."
"We, at Keyano, have been working hard over the past several years to include more and more courses and programs on the eCampus network and we are seeing growth in our efforts and registrations increase," Everatt added.
Barb Armstrong, Senior Strategist, eLearning & Instructional Design, Suncor Learning Innovation Centre, Keyano College, has been involved with the eCampusAlberta since it was first launched. She says the news is not surprising.
"Keyano College always believed in eCampusAlberta. We always knew it would grow and there are still a lot more opportunities coming in the future," said Armstrong.
Keyano College offers the Office Administration Diploma, Aboriginal Entrepreneurship Certificate, and Educational Assistant Certificate programs via eCampusAlberta. Office Software Specialist Diploma and Computer Information Systems are currently in the works.
"Keyano College is a founding member of eCampusAlberta and plays a vital role in creating access to online education for learners across Alberta. I offer my congratulations to Keyano College on achieving a 38 per cent increase in registrations through eCampusAlberta for the 2009/10 academic year and for achieving its highest number of registrations to date," says eCampusAlberta Executive Director, Dr. Tricia Donovan. |

| A touching story 23 years in the making - Keyano Nursing Pinning Ceremony made memorable for the McCutcheons | more . . . |
Michelle McCutcheon had a very good reason for missing her Nursing Pinning Ceremony at Keyano College, 23 years ago - she was in labour with her first child.
"Joshua came early. We had tickets to the dinner. I was actually in labour at the very moment when the ceremony was going on," laughs Michelle, who graduated from the two-year Nursing Diploma Program in 1985 and is now a Unit Supervisor for the Delivery Post-Partum and Ante-Partum Unit at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton.
This May, anticipating Joshua McCutcheon receiving his Nursing pin from Keyano College, Michelle's husband, Ben, hatched an idea to make the lost moment happen.
"I wrote to Bev Maron, Keyano's Nursing Chair, and suggested that Michelle be pinned along with Josh, and she was very helpful. She even suggested to keep it a surprise and that Michelle should pin Josh," explained Ben, who is the Director of Mail Operations for Canada Post, Edmonton.
The plan worked and on May 22 during the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Pinning Ceremony, not only did Michelle get her pin and roses, she even presented her son Joshua with his pin. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
"I was surprised and touched. It was great to be presented with the pin by someone I look up to, my mom" recalls Joshua, now working full-time for the Medicine Unit in the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre.
"It was very moving. I have been in college administration for over 25 years and this was one of the most emotional events I have ever attended," notes Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College.
A touched Michelle says she is grateful to Keyano College for helping to orchestrate the event, and surprised that her husband kept it all a secret.
"I was shocked and surprised, doubly shocked because my husband is not known to keep secrets. I was there for Josh and so proud of him. To share this with him made the day special" notes Michelle.
"All the kids were so gracious to me; I want them to know I'm very grateful. To be pinned by Barb Reitz (Keyano Nursing Instructor) with whom I worked for seven years at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre was an added bonus. Fort McMurray is my home, and Keyano College will always hold a special place in my heart," she said. |

| Mikisew Energy Services Group donates equipment - pledges additional support on the spot | more . . . |
For Mike Heck it was just the "right thing to do." During the recognition of the donation of three pieces of equipment for Keyano's Equipped for the Future initiative, Heck, General Manager, Mikisew Energy Services Group (MESG), pledged an additional three pieces of equipment on the spot.
"There is so much equipment in our city sitting idle during the summer months. Supporting Keyano College and their training initiatives is just the right thing to do," said Heck.
MESG initially donated a 966 wheel loader and two skid steers which are currently in use by students at Keyano's Suncor Energy Industrial Campus. Additional pledged equipment includes two more skid steers and a tandem dump truck.
Jim Foote, President, Keyano College, appreciated the commitment and dubbed the donation "very generous."
"Mikisew Energy Services Group recognizes the need for this equipment. This is a win-win situation for everyone. We appreciate this donation tremendously," Foote noted.
Heck said their donation enables MESG to support the community while also supporting their own employees.
"Our current and future staff can train on the latest technology at an accredited institution. The College shares our enthusiasm for training and participation in community initiatives. This is certainly a feel good story," said Heck.
John Payne, Heavy Equipment Instructor, Trades & Heavy Industrial Division, Keyano College, applauded the donated items and appreciated the news of additional support.
"This equipment makes a world of difference. It is cutting-edge machinery featuring current technology and it helps our students receive training that is essential in today's workforce," Payne said.
Angele Dobie oversees the Equipped for the Future program, which is Keyano Foundation's project in response to the Trades & Heavy Industrial Division's need to cut lease and purchase costs of equipment for use in training.
The donation from MESG is extraordinary notes Dobie.
"Mike Heck and his team have been very supportive of this project. Providing six pieces of equipment is an incredible commitment and we are extremely grateful." |

| Rocking Summer Solstice 10th anniversary event major hit! | more . . . |
Summer Dawn, 5, had a butterfly painted on her face, an Oilers tattoo on her left arm and a balloon animal in her hand, and she had seen a "creepy, green fish, with a long tail." Now that's how you celebrate Summer Solstice's 10th anniversary - a major hit as thousands came out to enjoy Keyano's annual premiere summer event on June 18.
Dino Martinis rocked the region late into the night, as children and adults danced to hits from the 80s and today - there was Billie Jean, Shout, Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling, just to name a few, and there was plenty of applause for the Calgary-based band, who thoroughly enjoyed their first visit to our town.
"It's great to be at Keyano College to celebrate the longest day of the year. The weather in Calgary feels like Christmas, out here, it feels like Hawaii," said Pat McGannon, one of the lead singers and founding member of the Dino Martinis.
Sponsored by Canadian Natural, the free event has grown by leaps and bounds. Ovation Catering sponsored the free barbecue enjoyed by one and all, and BCTV's Aqua Van from Vancouver drew many ooh's and aah's from children, who were intrigued by sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sea-stars.
Peter Janson, Senior Vice President, Horizon Operations, Canadian Natural, appreciated the well-organized event, which he dubbed a great ongoing collaboration between Keyano College and Canadian Natural.
"Our support of Summer Solstice goes back nine years. When Canadian Natural was new in town, this was one of the events that allowed us to be visible in the community. Together with Keyano, this is our way of giving back. This year's event was absolutely sensational. It is great to see the numbers grow every year," he said.
Cindy Amerongen, Vice President, External Relations, Keyano College, echoed similar sentiments.
"This was fantastic! The highlight of the event was watching the local performers. There are so many talented young people in our community. I'm so impressed by our staff and students who volunteered and with Canadian Natural and Ovation Catering volunteers," Amerongen said.
Talented community members gave one another a run for their money, as Summer Solstice Star Search saw some tough competition from amateur acts ranging from dances to singing, but the night belonged to the extraordinarily talented Boostrom family.
Melvin Boostrom won first place and $750 cash for his singing with an automatic bye into the finals of the Suncor Energy Homegrown Talent Search at interPLAY, Wood Buffalo's annual summer celebration of visual and performing arts, slated for August 6 through 8. His daughter, Karlie, 8, also an exceptional singer, won second place with $500, and third prize featuring $250 went to the Father Merc Glee Club.
Melvin and Karlie had each won for their singing the day before in Fort McKay's talent contest for Treaty Days, winning first place respectively in their age categories.
The Jazz Band Showcase featuring talented ensembles from Composite, Father Mercredi and Westwood high schools rounded out the day. |

| Fun Friday with Summer Solstice and the community | more . . . |
You'll be glad it's the longest day of the year, because there is so much fun to look forward to. Join Keyano College for Summer Solstice Picnic-in-the-Park this Friday, June 18 and leave with wondrous memories.
The free event is in its 10th year and will be held in the Doug MacRae Park on the corner of Franklin Avenue and King Street from 4 pm to 9 pm, sponsored by Canadian Natural with a free barbecue for all hosted by Ovation Catering and Banquets.
The Dino Martinis, Calgary's premiere party band will headline the musical component at 7:30 p.m. With a gargantuan set list that includes 1,500 hits from the past 40 years, the band can not only play your favourite songs, but they do so in the original key and completely by memory. The band has entertained parties ranging from exclusive private functions with Tom Hanks and members of the Japanese Royal family, to outdoor street parties with over 70,000 people in attendance.
Pat McGannon is a founding member of the Dino Martinis. He not only plays the keyboard but is President of PM Gigs, which manages the group. The band has been together for 17 years.
"We are looking very much forward to being in Fort McMurray. It's hard to believe, but it'll be our first time," said McGannon, during a phone interview from Calgary.
An interactive band, the Dino Martinis will play about 20 songs from the 80s and today's top 40; they encourage maximum audience participation.
"From what we've heard Keyano College Summer Solstice is a great event. We have something for everyone," McGannon said.
Summer Solstice Star Search will kick off the picnic featuring amateur entertainment acts from the community. Inflatable structures for children, a bridge building competition and much more will round out the day.

| Camp Mocikan is your ticket to a summer filled with fun | more . . . |
Catherine Altares and Nicole Ban are confident you won't find a better camp than Camp Mocikan (pronounced Mo-chee-kin) this summer - because Mocikan not only means it is fun, it is all about fun.
Hosted by Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Camp Mocikan will feature spectacular themes likes Go Around the World, celebrate Earth Week, Crazy Cartoons and Retro Week to name a few.
Registration for the third annual summer camp for children aged five to 12 has already started and spots are filling up quickly. Camp Mocikan runs for eight weeks from July 5 to August 27. Parents have the opportunity to enroll their children in as many or as few weeks as they choose.
Altares, Head Counsellor, Camp Mocikan, is excited to return for the second year. A third-year Education student at Keyano College, she feels the camp is a potent learning experience. A total of 13 counsellors will be running the camp this year--Nicole Ban is one of them. This will be her third summer with the initiative.
"This is not a regular summer job. It's giving back. Both the children and I enjoy it," said Ban, who hails from Fort McMurray.
New this year is a heavier focus on outdoor activities, which include trips to Borealis Park and Centennial Pool, and hiking. Perennial favourites like arts and crafts, movie days, and team sport activities are also on the agenda.
Enrollment fees for this year's camp have remained at last year's price of $250 per child per week. Lunch and snacks are included. This year the Centre is offering parents and care-givers a chance to save towards future camp offerings. When you register for one week, you get $25 in Mocikan money towards future camp dates.
Both camp counsellors say parents and campers should choose Camp Mocikan because of its established reputation.
"We have a diverse group of counsellors, many of whom return every year. We have something for everyone, from the artistically inclined to the athlete and everything in between," said Altares.
In addition, Camp Mocikan will also be hosting their annual Mini Camp for three and four-year olds. It runs in conjunction with the larger camp. Half-day sessions from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm are provided Monday to Thursday for little ones that are not quite ready for the complete camp schedule. The fee for Mini Camp is $100 per week and includes snacks each day.
Camp runs from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Before and after-care is available from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm at no extra charge.
Call the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre at 780-791-7792 to register. |

"We had heard that this was the premier tournament in Fort McMurray and we now understand why," said Rob Pentney, a first-timer to the event from June Warren-Nickles Energy Group in Calgary.
"I especially enjoyed interacting with the students at the various holes. They were great ambassadors for the College, energetic and articulate. This has been a great day," added Pentney.
One of the many highlights of the tournament was the Phoenix Heli-Flight's ball drop. Hovering over the hole adjacent to a huge special event tent that had been erected for the post-tournament banquet, guests watched in fascination as the helicopter found its mark, about 40 feet directly above the pin, and released hundreds of numbered golf balls. The winner of the ball drop took home $1,000.
Cindy Amerongen, Vice President, External Relations, Keyano College appreciated the sponsors and the participants who made the event a runaway success.
"We have a solid foundation of support for the Golf Classic built upon 25 years of relationship building with sponsors, volunteers and golfers. In the past 10 years this event has raised well over $1M for Keyano College," said Amerongen.
"The Foundation would like to send our thanks to our 73 corporate sponsors who registered early for a sold-out tournament. We also want to send a special thank you to Chef Stefan and the crew of First North Catering for the amazing food and for their enduring sponsorship of this tournament," Amerongen added.
"Our theme this year was all about providing students with the tools they need to be successful and we can't say enough how much we appreciate the sponsorship and donations," pointed out event chair Willy Neufeld, from the Keyano College Board of Directors.
"Thanks to the Foundation staff and the 100 volunteers, this was a terrific, well run tournament. On behalf of the Board I want to thank everyone for their huge support and for ensuring that Keyano College is Equipped for the Future." |

| Foundation launches $500,000 Huskies Athletics Endowment Campaign - The Realty Kings make first donation | more . . . |
The goal is to leave a legacy and create a future for tomorrow??s athletes. The Keyano College Foundation is pleased to launch the Huskies Athletics Endowment with a fundraising goal of $500,000. We are proud to announce the lead donation of $50,000 from The Realty Kings.
The official launch of the endowment will take place on June 5 during the Keyano College Foundation/First North Catering Golf Classic. The Foundation is thrilled to launch this project in celebration of the Keyano Huskies?? 25th anniversary. When the goal of $500,000 is reached it will provide approximately $25,000 in annual awards to student athletes at the College.
Wade Kolmel, Keyano Huskies Athletics Director, says the endowment will enable the Athletics Program to develop and create an exciting future for tomorrow??s athletes.
?The 25th anniversary year is the perfect catalyst to launch this project. This is a huge endeavour, and we believe the community will support us,? explained Kolmel.
?The Realty Kings have really launched us forward with their significant donation to this endowment,? he said.
?The King family has a strong relationship with Keyano College that has endured for many years. Doug and Sheran??s children have been involved with our youth initiatives from the time they were young. They went on to join the Huskies Basketball and Volleyball teams and are now assisting as coaches. The King family??s lead donation is a true commitment to the community where their children have been raised. Their financial contribution will support opportunities for future Huskies athletes,? Kolmel added.
For the Realty Kings, who are part of the Coldwell Banker Fort McMurray team, it is indeed coming full-circle. Doug and Sheran King moved to Fort McMurray in the 1970s. Doug King joined Keyano College in 1973, then known as the Alberta Vocational School, followed by his wife Sheran. The Kings then enrolled in the University Transfer Program and went on to secure their Bachelor??s degrees from the University of Alberta.
Christie and Michael King joined Keyano College in 2007 and 2001 respectively and went on to play for the Huskies Women??s Basketball and Men??s Volleyball teams. The endowment is their way of giving back.
?We have enjoyed our life here in Fort McMurray and we feel it is important to support the community in which we live. Contributing to the Huskies Athletics Endowment program is something we felt strongly about - it was easy to make this commitment,? explains Sheran King.
Doug King agrees. He says Keyano is continually ?striving to meet community needs - from the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre to the Bachelor of Education Program.?
Melane LeBlanc, Annual Giving Manager, Keyano Foundation, thanked the King family for their donation. She believes the endowment will not only attract elite athletes to the College, but also increase Huskies Athletics profile provincially and nationally.
?We encourage the community to donate generously to this endowment. Together we can create a brighter future for the athletes of today and tomorrow,? LeBlanc said.

| Petrowest Construction and Mikisew Energy Services Group donations make new course possible | more . . . |
Thanks to the donation of two articulated trucks from Petrowest Construction and a wheel loader from Mikisew Energy Services Group (MESG), Keyano College is now able to offer additional training for the Heavy Equipment Operator Program.
Both companies donated items to Keyano Foundation's Equipped for the Future initiative, a project launched last year in response to the Trades & Heavy Industrial Division's need to cut lease and purchase costs of equipment for use in training.
The Heavy Equipment Operator Program is an eight-week course which focuses on theory and practical training on crawler tractors, graders, front-end loaders, and articulated trucks.
Brendan Clarke, Associate Dean, Trades & Heavy Industrial Division, Keyano College, says the equipment donation enables students seeking entry-level construction positions to have "hands-on experience."
"This means we are able to train our students on equipment with current technology being used by industry," Clarke added.
Petrowest Construction is a locally-operated construction company, with capacity in construction, civil services and transportation as well as heavy equipment rental. It is a division of Petrowest Energy Services Trust.
Roger Young, Division Vice President, Petrowest Construction, believes the donation is important in creating a skilled workforce for the region.
"The biggest thing Keyano College does for the region is provide training programs. We see great value in partnering with Keyano and providing the use of this equipment," Young explained.
Mike Heck, General Manager, MESG, echoed similar sentiments.
"We have a lot of respect for Keyano and what they do for the community. Hopefully, this is the start of many good things to come," Heck said.
MESG, according to the company's official website is 100 percent owned and operated by the Mikisew Cree First Nation. It is a major service provider in the maintenance and construction field for the oil and gas industry in northern Alberta.
Angele Dobie, Fund Development Manager, Keyano College Foundation oversees the Equipped for Future initiative. She says the donation of the two articulated trucks from Petrowest Construction and the loader from Mikisew Energy Services Group "created a brand new training opportunity - this is a true community partnership, and we are grateful for the support." |

Bailey is professional engineer, certified technical communicator, and Canadian Registered Safety Professional. She was awarded the honour on May 6 at the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre during the North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) luncheon.
She teaches courses for the Occupation Health & Safety Certificate Program at Keyano College and has also designed health and safety courses as well as the Effective Trainer course; and started her own safety company, Bailey Technical Services.

Foote joined Keyano College as the Dean of Academic & Career Programs in 1993. He also served as the Acting Vice President, Instruction in 1997 before taking over as President in 2003.
During his tenure, Keyano College added physical infrastructure to align College capacity with community need including the Syncrude Technology Centre, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Fort Chipewyan Campus and the Cafeteria refurbishment project.
He also championed the efforts which resulted in the expansion of College programs, particularly in trades and technology, as well as launching a number of new programs including the Bachelor of Education collaborative degree program in 2007 and the Bachelor of Social Work collaborative degree and Crane & Hoist programs in 2008.

| Keyano celebrates 44th annual Convocation in new venue | more . . . |
As over 150 students walked on to the Alberta Building Trades Field in Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre in anticipation of graduation - the pride and joy they felt could be read clearly on their faces. It was a day they would remember forever - May 8, 2010. They celebrated along with family and friends at one of the largest Keyano Convocation gatherings in memory.
The 2010 Convocation marked the first time the event outgrew Keyano Theatre and was relocated to the larger Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre. The centre's stunning transformation ensured the facility had the right feel for the prestigious event, complete with large video screens, professional lighting and a large production crew.
Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College felt the event was a tremendous success.
"We celebrated one of the largest contingents of graduates in our 44-year history," said Everatt.
"Being forced to move into a larger venue due to the number of students participating in post secondary education is a great news story," she added.
The Governor's General Academic Medal went to Brennan Conroy, outgoing President of the Keyano College Student's Association (KCSA), who graduated from the Music Diploma program with a 3.92 overall GPA.
The medal was created in 1873 by the Earl of Dufferin. It is awarded to a full-time student who has achieved the highest overall grade point average upon graduation from a post-secondary diploma level program.
Conroy received the medal from John Wilson, Chair, Keyano Board of Governors, who introduced the extraordinary student.
"Not only has Brennan excelled in his studies, he took a significant leadership role and donated countless hours to representing the student body and working with the KCSA," said Wilson.
"It was unreal, and felt good," recalls Conroy about the medal. This was his second Governor General's Academic Medal. He received it previously in 2007 when he graduated from Composite High School.
Randi Roy and Felicia Dion were the Co-Valedictorians for the Class of 2010 - another first in Keyano's history.
The Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame Award went to Mayor Melissa Blake and long-time community member, Dave Kirschner received the 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award. |

Cindy Amerongen, Vice President, External Division, Keyano College says the Conference will link communities to researchers and help develop relationships between researchers at various institutions.
"This conference emphasizes the link between research, education and community success, and provides extensive opportunities for networking, exchange and collaboration," said Dee Ann Benard, ARDN's executive director.

| Keyano all set to celebrate 44th annual Convocation | more . . . |
Keyano College celebrates its 44th annual Convocation on May 8 with a regal ceremony in the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre - a new and bigger venue for the event.
An estimated 150 graduates and family and friends are expected to attend the grand event. Students from programs ranging from Trades to Office Administration will cross the stage to receive their parchment acknowledging the successful completion of their respective program.
Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College is excited about Convocation 2010. She says the need to move to a bigger venue to accommodate more students is a problem we didn't mind solving.
"Convocation is the highlight of the academic year at Keyano College. We get to celebrate our students and their accomplishments and are able to share this milestone with their families and friends in attendance and with the community as whole. Given that we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Nursing program at Keyano College makes the occasion especially memorable," Everatt said.
Mayor Melissa Blake will receive the Distinguished Alumni Wall of Fame Award at the ceremony, and long-time community resident Dave Kirschner will be honoured as the 2010 Distinguished Citizen Award.
Felicia Dion and Randi Roy, both Nursing students, are this year's Co-Valedictorians, a first in Keyano's history. Both have been best friends for six years, and moved to Fort McMurray together from Ontario, lived in the same house for a while, and are now graduating from the Nursing Program at Keyano College together.
"This is an honour, especially given this is the 25th anniversary of the Nursing Program also," said Dion, who was asked to be the Valedictorian by the College, but recommended Roy's name as she was leaving for a Mexico vacation.
Roy in turn suggested they both share the honour.
"I'm excited. It is an honour to be able to represent your class," said Roy.
The ceremony starts at 2 pm.
Congratulations Graduates and Award Winners! |
