ACADEMIC LIFE: New Student Orientation | Fall 2014more . . .
New Student Orientation

Monday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 2, 2014

Did you know studies show if you attend orientation, you are more likely to succeed throughout your academic career? It's true!

On September 1 & 2, your attendance at New Student Orientation (NSO) is essential. Even if you attended Ahead of the Herd in June, took a tour of campus and followed the To-do List, this is an important final step before starting classes.

During these two immersive days you will:

  • Be welcomed into the uLethbridge family at our commencement ceremony

  • Learn what will take place inside the classroom, including: what to bring, expectations of your professors, how you'll be graded, tips for academic success, resources available outside of the classroom etc.

  • Discover more about your program and the unique opportunities available, such as co-operative education, internships, international exchanges, applied studies and more

  • Have the opportunity to join a club, pick up your Fresh Fest package and choose an intramural sport

  • Realize you’re not alone. You'll meet other new students in the same situation as you—a little nervous and full of excitement

  • ‚??Have fun!

  • Click here to register or for more information.

    We need volunteers!

NSO would not happen without volunteers. If you are a current uLethbridge student in your 2nd year or higher, email our volunteer coordinator today.

    NOTICES: MATH 3860 - COMBINATORICSmore . . .
    Instructor: Joy Morris
Class: MWF, 1:00 to 1:50 pm
    Prereq: Math 2000
Textbook: online course pack by instructor; students to download and/or print

This is an excellent course for aspiring teachers, as many of the ideas and problems can be easily introduced to young children, even though the math that has built up around these ideas can be deep and surprising. Some of the structures we will learn about include Latin squares (closely
related to Sudoku puzzles) and Eulerian tours (the math
behind drawing a figure without lifting your pencil from the page, or going over a line twice).

The course introduces students to 3 of the main areas of combinatorics:
    - enumeration (counting, some of which most of you will have seen in high school, and/or in probability);
    - graph theory (design and study of networks); and
    - design theory (including some coding and cryptography).

The course is at the 3000-level because there will be proofs. Math 2000 is the only prerequisite.
